Iran Press/ Iran news: On the sidelines of the unveiling of Iran's water resources monitoring counter on Saturday, Iran's Minister of Energy, Ali Akbar Mehrabian, told reporters that despite consultations about the release of Helmand water, it still needs to be implemented.
Mehrabian said that the Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, was emphasizing the issue (Helman water right) and requested all officials to pay attention to its implementation.
He pointed to the necessary measures to release the Helmand water right, clarifying the essential step to transfer water from the Tahlab aquifer of Sistan and Baluchestan, southeastern Iran, which can partly supply the province's needs.
Iran's Energy Minister (Mehrabian) called the water transfer from the Oman Sea to Sistan and Baluchestan, Razavi, and South Khorasan Provinces among the ongoing measures being implemented.
"Due to the increasing water demand, managing water resources is an vital mission that must be taken into account," said Iranian Minister.
According to the Afghan-Iranian Helmand River-Water Treaty of 1973, signed by the then officials of Iran and Afghanistan, Iran's share of Helmand River water is 820 million cubic meters per year and about 26 cubic meters per second, which varies in different months and seasons.
The previous government of Afghanistan affirmed its commitment to the Helmand Treaty. Still, instead, it built the Kamal Khan Dam in Nimruz province on the Helmand River. It prevented the implementation of the agreement, which caused damage to human, animal, and plant life around the Helmand River in Sistan and Baluchestan province, Iran.
