Urmia (IP) - An Assyrian member of Iran's parliament (Majlis) has said the Iranian constitution is the best in the world as far as religious minorities are concerned.

Iran Press/Iran news: Attending a ceremony marking the Virgin Mary's (PBUH) passing away in Urmia, northwestern Iran, Jonathan Beth Clia stressed that Assyrians have always stood by the Iranian people and will stand by them forever.

"For 2,000 years, Assyrians have lived in Iran as Christians, and we have had peaceful coexistence with Muslims for 1,400 years," the Assyrian representative told Iran Press.

He pointedly added: "I hope other countries can take a leaf out of Iran's book and I hope Iran's constitutional articles are implemented all over the world so that other people can see how pleasant it is living with love among other divine religions."

In further comments, Jonathan Beth Clia added: "Iran's religious minorities have their rights enshrined in Iran's constitution. Iranian religious minorities live in a country where its constitution does not discriminate against people because they happen to be Christian or Muslim. We have the support of the constitution, so we don't need the help and compassion of Western Human Rights champion at all."101/211/215
