EU Diplomacy Chief Joseph Borrell

The European Union's diplomacy chief Josep Borrell has called for preservation of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran PressEurope: "The JCPOA is a significant achievement of sustained multilateral diplomacy following years of negotiations... the preservation of the JCPOA is now more important than ever," he said in a statement on Tuesday according to the European Union External Action website.

Alleging that Iran was not committed to its obligations, France, Germany and the UK triggered the dispute mechanism in the Iran nuclear agreement on Tuesday.

However, the E3 said it won't impose the unilateral 'maximum pressure' sanctions of US President Donald Trump who withdrew from the deal in 2018. Iran reciprocated by scaling back its commitments under the deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif has slammed the European Union's lack of action regarding their obligations under the nuclear agreement on Iran's peaceful nuclear program, saying EU's triggering the dispute resolution mechanism in the deal was a strategic mistake.

Borrell said that as coordinator of the Joint Commission of JCPOA Dispute Resolution Mechanism, he will oversee the process.

"The Dispute Resolution Mechanism requires intensive efforts in good faith by all. As the Coordinator, I expect all JCPOA participants to approach this process in that spirit," read the statement.
