Several hundred flights from key German airports have been cancelled because of a lingering industrial dispute and a public sector strike.

Members of German public sector workers union, Verdi, staged a strike at the airport on Tuesday, demanding higher wages in Frankfurt. Ground staff and other public sector workers staged walkouts across the country.

Thousands of passengers at four major German airports, including the biggest hub Frankfurt, were stranded on Tuesday, due to the strike.

Lufthansa said on Monday it was cancelling more than 800 of its planned 1,600 flights on Tuesday and Frankfurt airport operator, Fraport, has warned of disruption.

As well as Frankfurt, airports in Munich, Cologne and Bremen were also affected.

Neighbouring France has also faced industrial action in the last few weeks in protest at President Emmanuel Macron's planned reforms.
