Yifimov stressed that during the five years of fighting the common enemy, we have been able to reach the highest level of trust and understanding among ourselves, and we have made great developments thanks to the united efforts during this period.

Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia's defense and foreign ministries to hold talks with Syria for Moscow to obtain additional facilities and maritime access in Syria.

Russia and Syria also signed another 49-year agreement in 2017, according to which the Tartus base was assigned to the headquarters of 11 Russian ships.

The agreement can be automatically extended for another 25 years.

Russia has two permanent military installations in Syria; One is the airbase in Latakia province, which is used for airstrikes on terrorist groups, and the other is the naval base in Tartus on the Mediterranean.

Russia opposes a unipolar system and the return of the United States to its heyday; Therefore, it tries to strengthen multilateralism within the international community and provide more opportunities for itself.

Russia is trying to expand its sphere of influence in West Asia, and this influence has been evident in recent years on the Syrian scene with the help of Iran. Losing this position would be a setback for Russia's geopolitical ambitions.

Russia's move is in line with its national security doctrine. In implementing the principles of the Russian Security Doctrine Document (2020), Putin has defined the protection of Russia's environment from foreign threats as one of his main goals in foreign policy.
