Tehran (IP) - Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs has strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran, emphasizing that setting books and thoughts on fire is not freedom of speech, but a sign of barbarism.

Iran PressIran News: Ali Bagheri was meeting Mohammed Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, Assistant Foreign Minister of Qatar for Regional Affairs here in Tehran on Monday.

The two diplomats discussed ties between Iran and Qatar and regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Bagheri spoke about the disastrous incident of the desecration of the Holy Quran in some European countries, saying Quran burning is the worst insult to the divine book of Muslims and means trampling on the basic and obvious rights of two billion Muslims. Bagheri added that the repetition of this crime in Europe is a flagrant and perfect example of rights violation on the part of the fake defenders of human rights.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister referred to the place of thinking in the growth and perfection of human beings and said, "Burning of thoughts in Europe indicates the degradation of the place of human being's growth and perfection among those self-styled promoters of global development and progress."

The Iranian deputy foreign minister pointed to the Quran burning in some European countries, noting that this incident means celebrating the return of the evil of ignorance and the return of the dark medieval age to those countries.

He further referred to the Swedish and Danish governments’ excuse to justify the Quran burning, that is “sticking to freedom of expression.”

Bagheri said, "Burning books and thoughts has nothing to do with freedom, but is the same as barbarism, and these governments have a responsibility to prevent cultural barbarism in their countries. All responsible governments in the world, especially Muslim governments, have a duty to fight fiercely against cultural barbarism by pooling existing potentials and synergy in individual and collective forms."

Mohammed al-Khulaifi for his part spoke about full-fledged and expanding ties between Tehran and Doha. He described the continuation of consultations between foreign ministry officials of Iran and Qatar as a sign of the serious will of both sides to remove obstacles to expanding relations and opening new chapters in cooperation.

Khulaifi reaffirmed Qatar’s resolve to boost economic ties with Iran.

The senior Iranian and Qatari diplomats emphasized the Islamic world's hatred toward the crime of violating the Holy Quran and called for collective action by Islamic countries, especially through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
