In the introduction of his book, Chris Hewer stated: "The event of Ashura is considered as a victory for justice and truth, an incident which occurred due to the actions of corrupt and despotic people who usurped the leadership of the Muslim community."

The character of Imam Hussain (AS) has always been of particular and general interest in history. Meanwhile, there are Muslim and non-Muslim thinkers who are fascinated by his right-seeking, freedom, faith and courage. These thinkers, in search of the truth, always try to write books about the great characteristics of Imam Hussein (AS) from various aspects. Chris Hewer, an Irish Christian scholar is one of those who, over the years of studying and researching Islam, has tried to understand the real face of Islam and its great leaders such as the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Imam Ali (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS) to the western and non-Muslim society.

Christians mourn Ashura

Chris Hewer believes that Imam Ali (AS) had an influential role in Islamic society and is considered a superior role model not only for Muslims, but also for human society as a whole at all times. He says about the history of his acquaintance with Imam Ali (AS); he says thirty years ago, when starting his studies on Islam, he became aware of the existence of a person named Ali (AS), but he understood his real importance and personality when he started interacting with Shiite students and professors.

This is a very important point that everyone can collect facts about the life of Ali (AS). But only those who love him as the leader of the Muslim community and appointed by God, can establish a real relationship with him; and this loving is a part of loving God. If someone loves God, he will surely love those who love God.

Chris Hewer book on Imam Hussain (AS)

Hewer says about the universal personality of Imam Hussein (AS): "Imam Hussain (AS) does not belong only to Shiites and Muslims, but to God and to all humanity. My greatest concern is to know as much as possible about the life of Imam Hussain (AS), his virtues and morals. If we really believe that Imam Hussain (AS) is an example for man and all humanity, we should examine the events that he was involved in and follow his example in life. If we believe in the nature on which all humanity was born, we must know that the message of Imam Hussain (AS) must be communicated in a way that affects every listener."

Chris Hewer, an English orientalist and Islamic scholar, about the need to learn from the incident of Karbala says: "If we want to understand the concept of Karbala, we have to look at it as something beyond the territory of Iraq and beyond a discussion about Shiites or Muslims. We should consider the incident of Karbala as a part of the history of humanity. We humans have a collective history, we are not the first human generation. We can look at the past and the way of life of other people and learn from them, and this look can be a lesson and a warning for us."

About remembering the events of Karbala, he says: "That these people tyrant people (Yazid's army) did those heinous acts under the circumstances, and Imam Hussain (AS) acted in such a great and honorable way in this situation, it has caused me as a Christian to also like to learn a lesson by remembering the events of Karbala. Remembering the events of Karbala is a way to remember the duty of servitude to God. Every day we have the opportunity to live with the spirit of Karbala and we have the opportunity to show the moral dignity that Imam Hussain (AS) showed in us.
