Nigeria (IP) - Muslim ummah in Nigeria has started the ten days of daily mourning to commemorate the martyrdom of the third Shia leader, Imam Hussein, son of Lady Fatima (as).

Iran PressAfrica: During the annual mourning in Nigerian states, different scholars from Shi'a and Sunni Islamic schools of thought are invited to deliver lectures on various topics about Ashura and the lessons to be learned.

In Katsina State of Northwestern Nigeria, Sheikh Yaqoub Yahaya has talked about the resistance of Imam Hussein against tyrants and injustice and the lessons that Muslims should learn.

Also, in Bauchi State, Sheikh Saleh Muhammad Sani, who delivered his Ashura lecture on the importance of prayer, has drawn the attention of Muslims to be very careful while praying. He said despite being at war, thirsty, and hungry, Imam Hussein had led the prayer. He added that Imam Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was once asked about what made him feel fear in his life. Imam Khomeini said before the Islamic Revolution, there was a day heavily armed security forces took him from Qom to Tehran. On their way, they diverted from the main road to another unknown, threatening to assassinate him secretly. He said had he felt that day, he would have put doubt on the whole prayer he conducted.

On 10 Muharram, 61 years after the Hijra of the holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him and his Progeny), thousands of Umayyad army encircled Imam Hussein, his family, and companion, who was less than 100 in the desert of Karbala, massacred Imam Hussein and all the men with him in a brutal manner except his son, Imam Ali Zainul Abidin who had been taken together with all the women as prisoners of war to Yazid, son of Mu'awiya who ordered the massacre.
