Iran Press/Iran news: According to the Hirmand Treaty, which was signed by the then Iranian and Afghan authorities in 1972, Iran's share of the Hirmand River water is 820 million cubic meters per year and about 26 cubic meters per second, which of course varies in different months and seasons.
The previous government of Afghanistan, which claimed to secure Iran's water rights, by constructing Kamal Khan Dam in Nimroz province on the Hirmand River, practically prevented the implementation of this agreement, which caused great damage to human, animal and plant life in the area around the Hirmand River in Iran, especially in Sistan and Baluchestan province.
With the establishment of the interim Taliban government in Afghanistan, the interim government reaffirmed its commitment to the Hirmand Agreement on Iran's water right.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi made the comments on a visit to the city of Zabol in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan near the border with Afghanistan on Wednesday.
The Iranian minister said that the Iranian officials have talked about Iran's share of water of the Helmand (Hirmand) river with the Afghan side.
He added that Tehran has reminded Afghanistan about its obligations under the river-sharing agreement between the two countries. 219
