Hundreds of Nigerian Muslims in Kano State commemorate the sixth anniversary of the martyrdom of Iran's IRGC anti-terror commander, General Qasem Soleimani, and his comrades, who were assassinated near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020, on the orders of then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

Why it matters:

Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani is widely seen as a key figure in defending oppressed peoples across West Asia, having led the fight against terrorist groups—particularly ISIS—in Syria and Iraq, backed by Western powers.

General Soleimani is also praised due to his struggle for the freedom of Palestine against the genocidal regime of Israel. After his martyrdom on 3rd January 2020, the Palestinian people and the resistance leaders referred to him as the backbone of the resistance front.

In the event:

Earlier in the event, special prayers were offered for the souls of martyr Lt. Gen. Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Sheikh Sunusi Abdulkadir, an Islamic cleric and representative of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in Kano, was then invited to deliver a speech on the life, mission, and sacrifice of General Soleimani.

The event was also attended by Malam Surajo Kano, a renowned Islamic singer, who performed religious songs praising General Soleimani’s role and sacrifice.

The ceremony was held on Friday evening at Fagge Juma’a Mosque in Kano State, northern Nigeria.

What he's saying:

Sheikh Sunusi Abdulkadir said that what the enemies of humanity and world arrogant powers fail to understand is that Qasem Soleimani was not merely an individual, but an unshakable ideology rooted in the hearts of people across the world.

“That is why, six years after they [the enemies] assassinated him, the resistance and struggles against terrorism and oppression that martyr Soleimani built continue to grow stronger and remain unshakable,” he said.
