Why it matters:
Iranian officials describe the martyrdom as further evidence that Israel has failed to defeat the Palestinian resistance, despite months of genocidal war and large-scale attacks on Palestinians in Gaza.
The big picture:
The Gaza-based resistance movement Hamas confirmed on Monday that Abu Obeida was martyred in an Israeli air attack in Gaza.
According to the group, he was targeted along with members of his family in a “cowardly and criminal” bombing.
The assassination comes amid Israel’s continued assault on Gaza, which Palestinian groups say has strengthened, rather than weakened, resistance.
What they’re saying:
IRGC statement wrote that this martyrdom is a clear sign of the victory of the Palestinian resistance fighters and the defeat of the Zionist army.
“The blood of martyrs will accelerate the decline of the occupying regime. The future undoubtedly belongs to the resistance.”
Hamas statement:
“Abu Obeida stood firmly against the enemy and never turned his back on the battlefield. He was martyred during a treacherous bombing by the Zionist army in Gaza, the land of steadfastness and jihad.”
“He sacrificed his life in the most honorable battle in the history of the Palestinian people’s struggle — Operation Al-Aqsa Flood — for a sacred cause whose voice he had long been.”
Go deeper:
Iranian officials say Israel’s military campaign has not broken Palestinian resolve, despite widespread destruction in Gaza.
The IRGC has repeatedly argued that resistance movements across the region are gaining strength, not losing it, as the war continues.
