Mekdad: Syrian presidential election not to be delayed

Damascus (IP): The Syrian foreign minister announced that the presidential election will not be delayed even if the Syrian Constitutional Committee fails to reach an agreement.

Iran Press/Middle East: The Syrian Constitutional Committee has been set up by the United Nations to draft a new constitution based on UNSCR 2254. The committee includes representatives of the current Syrian government and the Syrian opposition.

So far, 4 rounds of meetings of this committee have been held and its fifth round is scheduled to be held on January 24th.

The current Syrian constitution dates back to 2012 when it was introduced by the Syrian government after the beginning of the protests in response to the demands of the opposition and the protesters.

"The United States continues to support terrorists in northeastern Syria to ensure its presence in the country," Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told Sputnik, on Monday.

Faisal al Mekdad also called for a Russian military presence in Syria, saying that a Russian military presence in Syria is not only useful but also necessary.

In another part of his speech, the Syrian Foreign Minister referred to the issue of the coronavirus vaccine and stated that Damascus is in talks with Moscow to introduce the "coronavirus" vaccine.

The Syrian foreign minister, who recently returned from a visit to Moscow, described Damascus' relations with Moscow as strategic and historic and said they would deepen in the next stages.

Al-Mekdad called the talks with Russian officials on the situation in Syria and Moscow's support for the Damascus government in the fight against terrorism “deep and constructive”.

Al-Mekdad met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow last Thursday to discuss the Syrian crisis, the political settlement of the crisis, and developments.
