Why it matters:
Araghchi made the remarks on the martyrdom anniversary of General Qassem Soleimani, warning that the global system is sliding away from international law-based governance toward domination by major powers.
The big picture:
General Qasem Soleimani (1957–2020) was a senior Iranian military commander who dedicated his life to combating terrorist groups, including ISIS. He served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and led its Quds Force from 1998 until his assassination by the United States in 2020.
He was described as “the most powerful commander in the war against ISIS in West Asia”.
What he's saying:
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi:
"The diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a resistance-oriented diplomacy, has always sought to convey the message of justice-seeking."
"Today, we stand at a critical juncture in world history, where the international order once based on 'law' has transformed into an international order based on 'force' and the notion of 'peace through power' has overshadowed 'peace through diplomacy.'
"The anti-hegemonic and justice-seeking nature of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy remains steadfast and more resonant than ever, continuing to stand against power-driven hegemonists and keeping alive the call for truth and justice."
