The special counter-terrorism exercise of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, titled Sahand 2025, commenced today in East Azerbaijan Province, northwestern Iran.

Why it matters: 

The joint exercise is hosted by the Ground Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to strengthen indigenous regional deterrence against terrorism.

According to organizers, participating military and security units will take part in specialized counter-terrorism training programs aimed at enhancing operational readiness and improving joint capabilities.

The exercise is being held by the Imam Zaman (AJ) Mechanized Brigade — recognized as one of the IRGC’s most capable and active combat formations.

Iran, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are participating in the joint military exercise.

The big picture:

Sahand 2025 is conducted as part of the SCO’s annual rotational framework, with each member state hosting joint counter terrorism training in alternating years. The initiative aims to expand regional cooperation, improve interoperability among forces, and reinforce collective preparedness against security threats.

The drill will continue through December 5 in Shabestar County.
