Why it matters:
The UN’s strong condemnation highlights global concern over settlers' violence and their role in increasing instability in the occupied territories.
The big picture:
Attacks by Israeli forces and settlers have escalated in the West Bank since the Gaza war in October 2023, leaving more than 1,070 Palestinians dead and 10,300 injured, according to Palestinian figures.
In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a landmark opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Al-Quds.
What he’s saying:
“Such acts of violence and desecration of religious sites are unacceptable,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters.
Guterres stressed that religious sites must be respected and protected at all times.
He denounced “all attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their property,” warning that extremist violence is inflaming tensions and must stop immediately.
Dujarric added that Israel, as the occupying power, is obligated to protect Palestinian civilians and hold perpetrators accountable.
