Iranian Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the condition of the Iranian citizen Mahdieh Esfandiari detained by the French government, with Iran’s embassy in Paris maintaining regular contact with Ms. Esfandiari, Spokesman Baghaei told reporters.

Why it matters:

The so-called advocate of democracy and freedom of speech has detained Esfandiari for 6 months on the charge that she published a post in support of the Palestinian nation amid the Israeli regime's genocidal war on Gaza.

The big picture:

Esfandiari, an Iranian citizen, was arrested in France in February 2025 alongside others.
Iran’s embassy in Paris is in constant contact with Esfandiari and her lawyers, with the latest consular visit on Aug. 18.
A French court recently denied her conditional release, prompting her legal team to continue efforts for freedom.

What he's saying:

Esmail Baghaei: “The matter was first raised here at this podium, and afterward it appeared in French media. Our embassy in Paris is continuously following up on the case. The most recent consular meeting with Ms. Esfandiari took place on August 18. Our colleagues at the embassy are in regular contact with her and address any needs she may have. They are also coordinating with her lawyers."

"The latest development in the case is that her conditional release was denied, though her lawyers are working to secure her freedom. We still believe there has not been a fair judicial process, and no reasonable or legal justification for her detention has been presented to us. Therefore, we will continue to pursue this matter seriously, both through our embassy in Paris and with the French Embassy here in Tehran.”

The Status quo:

Iran vows to keep pressing for Esfandiari’s release, potentially escalating diplomatic talks. Her lawyers are appealing the denial of conditional release, with a hearing expected soon.
