Groups of Muslim leaders from different organizations in Nigeria have decried the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Gaza Strip, where human beings are dying of hunger and bombing as a result of the Israeli blockade of food and military assault.

Why it matters:

People across the world continue to express sadness and concerns about the inhumanity of the Israeli murderous regime on Palestinians, which takes over 70 years, deteriorating from 7 October 2023, leading to the death of over 61,000 innocent civilians and the total destruction of more than 80 percent of Gaza.

The Big picture:

The Muslim international awareness led the press conference on Tuesday in Lagos State in the South Western Nigeria, where leaders and representatives of different Muslim groups from both Sunni and Shi'a and Human Right organizations including, Muslim Rights Commission (MURIC), Muslim Public Affairs Centre, Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria, Al-Mu'minaat (The Believing Women) Organization, International Institute of Human Heritage, The Islamic Movement in Nigeria and Quds Foundation participated.

These groups raised their voice, called for the immediate serious action by the world to stop the Zionists terrorism on Palestinians and also demanded for the freedom of Palestine as a sovereign country.

What he's saying:

Addressing the press conference, the director of Muslim Awareness International, Abdulwaheed Atoyebi, described the situation in Gaza as a genocide, using starvation deliberately by Israel as a weapon.

"What is happening in Gaza now, the killing continues. Hunger, starvation, and denial of water by Israel continue. Water, which is the basic necessity of human beings, and food are not available for humans in Gaza."

"Lying on his deathbed with sunken stomach, protruding bones and a pale face," says Atoyebi while painting a grim picture of daily life in Gaza, citing example with Adel Mahdi, a 27 year-old man whose weight dropped drastically from 50 kilograms to just 15 kilograms before dying in Gaza.

He added that the United States is acting unjustly and remains complicit in the ongoing genocide. The press conference urged Muslims and Christians worldwide to amplify advocacy, mobilize humanitarian aid, and pressure their governments not just to condemn but to take serious actions against Israeli cruelty.
