Sri Lanka's presidential party won a majority of votes in the parliamentary elections.

Iran Press/Asia: According to the Sri Lankan Electoral Commission on Friday, President Gutabaya Rajapaksa's party and its allies won the majority of votes in the parliamentary elections.

The people of Sri Lanka went to the polls on Wednesday to elect a new parliament.

Sri Lanka's president dissolved parliament in March this year.

Rajapaksa was elected president of Sri Lanka last November and used his constitutional powers to dissolve parliament six months early, hoping to win a majority in the election.
