The UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres reiterated his support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Thursday 25 June.

Iran Press/America: António Guterres cited JCPOA as an important step, saying "everything needs to be done to maintain the nuclear deal."

Guterres made the remarks a day after an informal US meeting with members of the Security Council to try to prevent ending Iran's arms embargo.

Brian Hook, the US government's special envoy for Iran, and Kelly Craft, the US permanent representative to the United Nations, on Wednesday, reiterated their baseless allegations against Iran and persuaded members of the Security Council to extend Iran's arms embargo.

As the UN arms embargo on Iran, part of Security Council Resolution 2231, draws to a close, the United States has redoubled its efforts to end the sanctions.

Prohibitions on arms sales to Iran will be lifted under the provisions of Security Council Resolution 2231 on 18 October 2020.

Chinese and Russian officials with veto power in the UN Security Council have explicitly stated that they oppose the extension of arms embargoes against Iran.

Recently, China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations emphasized that the United States has violated its commitments under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 by withdrawing from the JCPOA, and announced that the United States has no right to extend arms embargoes against Iran, let alone to activate the JCPOA trigger mechanism for the automatic return of sanctions.

Russia's foreign ministry has said the United States cannot use UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to extend Iran's arms embargo.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his country from the international agreement on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in violation of Washington's commitments under the JCPOA, and announced the return of nuclear sanctions
