Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif congratulated the Christmas to Christians in Iran and worldwide on Tuesday marking birth anniversary of the Prophet Jesus (Peace Be Upon Him).

"Wishing my Christian compatriots, and all across our globe who are observing, a very Happy Christmas and a joyous, peaceful holiday season," he wrote in a twitter message on the eve of Christmas on Tuesday.

There are an estimated 500,000 Christians and 600 churches in Iran where they can freely practice their faith. Christian Iranians are also represented in the Parliament (Majlis).

"The birth of Jesus Christ, prophet in Islam, is a wondrous occasion to celebrate," Zarif added.
