US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should "get ready" for missiles to be fired into Syria and Russia has advised Washington to target terrorists instead of the Syrian government and its forces.

"Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!,'" Trump said.

Shortly after this threat, a Russian foreign ministry spokesman said, "Smart missiles should fly toward terrorists, not legal government."

This latest tweet comes after Russia's ambassador to Lebanon has challenged the White House by saying: "All incoming U.S. missiles fired at Syria will be shot down".

Amid rumors that Washington may take military action over the chemical attack, Russian and the US-sponsored resolutions on the alleged chemical attack in Syria, have been rejected at the UN Security Council.

An alleged chemical weapons attack hit the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta region in the suburban area near Damascus late on Saturday, reportedly killing at least 60 people and wounding more than 1,000 others.

The Western countries blamed the incident on the Syrian government. Damascus rejected the accusations as “chemical fabrications,” which were made by the terrorists themselves in a bid to halt pro-government forces’ advances.

Damascus said that the so-called Jaish al-Islam Takfiri terrorist group, which has dominant presence in Douma, was repeating the accusations “in order to accuse the Syrian Arab army, in a blatant attempt to hinder the Army’s advance.”
