Canada imposes new sanctions on seven Iranian individuals and entities over their alleged involvement in Iran's weapons sales, including those to Russia.

Canada has been imposing sanctions on Iranian officials and companies for the past few decades on the pretext of arms smuggling, sanctions evasion, and human rights violations.

Canada’s Foreign Ministry announced the sanctions on Friday, saying that they “target 3 individuals and 4 entities that are Iranian business people and companies "

The listed individuals are Hossein Hatefi Ardakani, Mehdi Gogerdchian, and Hossein Pourfarzaneh. The sanctioned entities include Kavan Electronics Behrad Limited Liability Company, Basamad Electronic Pouya Engineering Limited Liability Company, Teyf Tadbir Arya Engineering Company, and Farzanegan Propulsion Systems Design Bureau.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly said: "Canada is taking action against Iran whose complete disregard for regional peace and security will further escalate regional tensions and violence."

The sanctions by Canada are the latest in a series of Western states’ measures against Iran ever since the Ukraine war broke out in February 2022. Iran has, on various occasions, dismissed allegations that it gives arms to Russia.
