"As the Foreign Ministry, we will continue working toward Bolivia’s joining BRICS as a full-fledged member as well as activating new mechanisms of financial integration between countries of the Global South which would reduce dependence on the dollar," Sosa said at the appointment ceremony that was broadcast by Bolivia TV.

The term BRIC was coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in 2001 to describe the startling rise of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The bloc had its first summit in 2009 in Russia. South Africa joined in 2010.

The summit of the bloc was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 22 to 24, 2023. With the leaders of 54 African nations invited, this was the biggest meeting of the heads of state and government of the Global South in recent years.

Participants in the summit agreed that Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to join the bloc from January 1, 2024. Iran is now a member of the bloc.

Before Sosa’s appointment, the Foreign Ministry was temporarily headed by Maria Nela Prada, the minister of the presidency.Previous Foreign Minister Rogelio Mayta stepped down on November 15 to become a member of the Court of Justice of the Andean Community.

In July, Mayta announced that Arce had officially notified BRICS of his country’s interest in joining the grouping.204
