Iran Press/Asia: "Some American politicians are constantly using speculation to attack and discredit China for no reason. We call on these American politicians to act professionally, and maintain the credibility and national image of the United States and refrain from slandering China," Zhao Lijian told reporters in Beijing on Monday.
He called the US officials' argument that China was influential in the country's elections "absurd", adding: "It is the United States that is interfering in China's internal affairs and thereby harming China's interests. China will also respond legally to this issue."
The Chinese foreign ministry official said that compatibility is his country's policy towards the United States, stressing: "We are committed to achieving cooperation, non-confrontation, mutual respect, and a win-win situation while protecting national independence, our interests and security."
"Our message to Russia, China and Iran is not to interfere in our elections," said US President Donald Trump's National Security Adviser, Robert O'Brien, claiming that interfering in the US elections was their red line.
On Friday, William Evanina – director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, which is part of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence – issued a statement that said: "foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway US voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift US policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process."
Evanina claimed China, Russia, and Iran were the primary concerns. He said while Russia was working to "boost" President Donald Trump’s candidacy, China and Iran were working to thwart his reelection.
