Iran Press/ Middle East: On Monday night, many Bahrainis holding pictures of Sheikh Ali Salman chanted slogans against the Al-Khalifa regime and demanded the cleric's immediate release.
Sheikh Ali Salman was arrested on December 28, 2014, on spying for Qatar, which was attributed to him by Bahraini judicial officials, and was sentenced to life in prison.
The ruling provoked mixed reactions and international condemnation.
Bahrain has been facing a crisis of public discontent since 2011 over the oppressive policies of the Al Khalifa regime.
Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned the Al Khalifa regime for cracking down on dissent and called for reforms in its political system.
Hossein Amir Abullahian, Special Assistant to the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament for International Affairs, tweeted on Tuesday on the anniversary of Sheikh Ali Salman's arrest saying: "Six years have passed since the arrest and imprisonment of Sheikh Ali Salman, the leader of the Al-Wefaq Society in Bahrain. During my time as ambassador to Manama, I recognized him as a thoughtful, pious, and moderate cleric; He was a clear symbol of the democratic struggle."
He went on to slam Al Khalifa saying that it confines democracy & regime is hijacked by terrorist Zionism.
