Iran Press/ Asia: Conflict first broke out in the late 1980s, when both sides were under Soviet rule, and Armenian forces captured swathes of territory near Nagorno-Karabakh — long recognized internationally as Azerbaijan’s territory, but with a large Armenian population.
There have been frequent reports of fighting along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border since the end of their 2020 war.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian has accused Azerbaijan of concentrating forces near the border between the two countries amid a fresh spike in tensions between the longtime rivals.
Speaking at a meeting of senior government officials on September 7, Pashinian claimed Azerbaijan was conducting an “ongoing military buildup along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Armenian-Azerbaijan border.”
Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the information related to this issue has been confirmed from several sources. Also, Yerevan emphasized that governmentis not interested in escalating military tension and is ready to continue efforts to reach a peace agreement.
The Republic of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the statements made by the Armenian authorities and demanded Yerevan to stop political and military provocative actions.
