Iran Press/Iran news: The Australian ambassador to Iran, Ian Biggs made the remark on Tuesday in his visit to the port of Bandar Abbas, in Hormozgan province, in southern Iran.
In his visit to various sectors of Shahid Rajaee Port Special Economic Zone, the Australian ambassador exchanged views with provincial managers with regard to the situation of international cooperation between Iran and Australia, Mehr News Agency reported.
Biggs added: "Considering the high potential and capacities in this region, Australian government is keenly interested in expanding its port and maritime cooperation with Iran."
Ian Biggs added: "Getting familiar with trade and business capacities, maritime industries, free zones and special economic zone of this province are the main reasons behind my trip to the province."
He went on to say that Hormozgan province has many resources and capacities which could lead to joint cooperation between Iran and Australia, further facilitating trade and business ties between Tehran and Canberra.
For his part, the Director General of Hormozgan Province Ports and Maritime Organization Allah Morad Afifipour briefed the ambassador on the high capacities and potentials as well as latest achievements of Shahid Rajaee Port.
Afifipour said that Shahid Rajaee port is connected with 80 international ports and its capacity as the largest commercial port of Iran is still expanding.
He added that the port annually has capacity to load and unload more than 100 million tons of oil and non-oil products .
