Local police reported that part of the Gokhale bridge in the western Indian city of Mumbai collapsed as a result of heavy rains that hit the city on Tuesday night.

According to the local media reports, Gokhale Bridge, connecting Andheri East to West Mumbai has collapsed.  At least 6 people were injured in the incident.

 Rescue teams are currently working at the scene of the disaster, and cleaning up debris in order to ensure that there are no people left underneath.

The bridge collapse has also affected train services, with trains on the western line , in particular, being affected.  Traffic above and below the bridge has stopped for now.  

An investigation into the incident has been launched by the authorities.  Thousands of local residents use the bridge every day in Mumbai.
