The 40th and 41st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits officially kicked off in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, today (November 11), while the focus is on stronger action against Myanmar due to political conflicts in the country.

Iran PressAsia: After focusing on the political crisis in Myanmar, the most central discussions are the escalation in tension between North Korea and South Korea, as well as the border conflicts between the members of this group and China in the South China Sea.

On the other hand, the issue of the economic revival of the member states of the Union and the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine on it is also one of the main topics of the meeting.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said: "We have come a long way as a regional organization as a family and brothers and sisters. In this way, we must maintain our unity, solidarity and centrality."

Myanmar, which is a member of this organization, has no presence in today's meeting. Cambodia, as the host of this meeting, supported the position of the members and demanded that the military government in Myanmar send a non-political representative to the meeting, which was opposed by Myanmar.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Rento Marsudi said in this regard: "It seems that the leaders of the member states of ASEAN should respond to Myanmar's conditions because, notably, Myanmar's military leaders have shown little commitment to the five-point consensus."

According to this five-point consensus, General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military government in Myanmar, with the leaders of ASEAN agreed to end the cycle of violence against Myanmar's political opposition and civilian protests through "concrete, practical and time-bound measures".

The union was formed on August 8, 1967, by Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and then, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Brunei also joined it.
