British police say a man was shot dead during a confrontation with firearms officers on Saturday near the Kensington Palace royal residence in London.

Iran PressEurope: A specialist unit was called out after reports of a man seen with a firearm at a bank in the Kensington area of the city shortly after 3:00 pm (1500 GMT).

Some 20 minutes later, the unit stopped a vehicle and shots were fired. Paramedics, including an air ambulance, were called but the man was pronounced dead just before 4:10 pm.

The man, who has yet to be identified, was seen leaving the scene in a vehicle, before being stopped by armed officers 15 minutes later near Kensington Palace.
