Asked about the importance of restoration and strengthening of historic monuments, Kelly said: "O.K., well, we know because of the events of 20th and 21st centuries, that it is important that we have a standardized way of approaching the care and maintenance of historical monuments and so that is one of the things we are going to be talking about over the next three days."

He added: "We shall talk about just exactly how we can come up with a uniform way of approaching our built cultural heritage. This is my second time here in Iran. I was in Isfahan in 2015, and I am favourably impressed with my Iranian colleagues, their intellect and their knowledge.  So I know that everybody is on the right track, and I am just happy to be here, having a little part of the entire process."
