Six French tourists killed in terrorist attack in Niger

Six French tourists have been killed in a terrorist attack in Niger, West Africa.

Iran PressAfrica: Six French citizens and their local guide and driver were killed Sunday by gunmen riding motorcycles in an area of southwestern Niger that is home to the last West African giraffes, officials said.

The group was attacked in a giraffe reserve in the West African country's Kouré area, the governor of Tillaberi region, Tidjani Ibrahim Katiella, told Reuters.

"They were intercepted and killed," he said, confirming that six French people and two Nigeriens died.

French President Emmanuel Macron's office confirmed that French nationals had been killed in Niger. It said Macron spoke on the phone with Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou, but provided no further details.

There was no immediate comment from the government in Niger.
