In 1970, Abu Mahdi joined Iraq's Hizb ad-Da'wa al-Islamiya. In 2001, he took command of the Badr Corps.

On the Badr Corps, he says: "The most important commanders of Hashd al-Sha'abi are from the Badr Corps. At that time, we launched a joint organization and contacted revolutionary groups inside Iraq; we carried out numerous operations against Saddam's Ba'athist regime in various parts of Iraq."
