21st SCO Summit kicks off in Tajikistan capital

Dushanbe (IP) - The 21st Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit kicked off in the Tajikistan capital city of Dushanbe, on Friday with the participation of the leaders of 12 member and observer states, including Iran's President.

Iran PressAsia: In addition to the Tajik president, the regional summit hosted by Tajikistan will be attended by the leaders of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as the presidents of Russia, China, India, and Mongolia have participated in this meeting online.

According to Tajik news sources, the meeting will discuss the main results of the SCO activities over the past 20 years, the status and prospects of multilateral cooperation within the organization during the anniversary meeting.

The leaders will discuss a range of issues, including regional and international cooperation, and discuss joint action within the SCO to address the consequences of the crisis caused by the new Coronavirus pandemic.

Following the SCO summit in Dushanbe, the leaders of the SCO member states are expected to decide on the process of accepting the Islamic Republic of Iran as a full member of the organization and granting the position of dialogue partner to the Arab Republic of Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

The heads of state will also decide on the new Secretary-General of the SCO and the Director of the SCO Regional Committee on Counter-Terrorism.

The organization's leaders are meeting amid rising tensions over Afghanistan. Since the Taliban took office in Afghanistan, the SCO member states have differed on this issue. China and Uzbekistan have expressed interest in and welcomed the Taliban-led government. But Tajikistan strongly opposes the government, saying an inclusive government should be formed in Kabul with the participation of all ethnic groups, including Tajiks.

The leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will hold their first joint meeting with the leaders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan.

Ebrahim Raisi on his first foreign trip as President, at the official invitation of his Tajik counterpart "Imam Ali Rahman" and to address the summit, yesterday (Thursday) at the head of a high-level delegation of political and economic officials has participated in Tajikistan.

In addition to attending the summit, the Iranian president also held bilateral meetings with the heads of states and heads of delegations present at the SCO summit.

Raisi will also hold a bilateral meeting with his Tajik counterpart after the Shanghai Summit at the official invitation of the President of Tajikistan.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established 20 years ago. This organization was established in 2001 with the aim of combating terrorism and extremism and increasing economic cooperation, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been one of its observer members.
