Iran Press/ America: Majid Takht-e Ravanchi at the UN Security Council meeting on " Maintaining International Peace and Security; Security in the Context of Terrorism and Climate Change "warned of the efforts of some members of the Security Council to establish any link between climate change and peace and international security.
Today, the international community faces urgent challenges related to terrorism and climate change.
The fight against terrorism must be carried out within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations, international law and with the assurance of full observance of the principles of independence and equality of sovereignty of states and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries," he added.
Takht e Ravanchi stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran, within the framework of its international obligations, continues its efforts to prevent and effectively fight terrorism in all its forms and instances.
Iranian envoy to the UN further pointed to the negative effects of climate change and its consequences and said: "Meeting such challenges requires a systematic and coordinated response from all member states, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the most appropriate platform for such a coordinated response."
Takht-e Ravanchi noted at the meeting that the Islamic Republic of Iran has taken important steps to counter and reduce the negative effects of climate change. However, he added, the imposition of illegal US sanctions against Iran, which is a clear violation of the fundamental principles of international law, has not only prevented Iran from accessing the financial resources and technologies needed to meet the challenges of climate change but has also adversely affected domestic capacity.
In the end, the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations emphasized that climate change, as an issue related to sustainable development, is beyond the competence of the Security Council.
"The United Nation Security Council's role in this issue, which lacks the necessary expertise and tools, would be a violation of the framework of the tasks and responsibilities of the main UN bodies and complicate their work in effectively addressing the challenges of climate change," Iran's envoy said. 219
