Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghassemi has welcomed the arrival of Syrian government forces and the raising of Syrian flag in the northern town of Manbij, saying this is an important step in establishing the writ of the legitimate government in Damascus throughout the length and breadth of Syria.

Iran Press/Iran news: According to an Iran Press report, foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghassemi stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, and said the arrival of the Syrian army in the town can be viewed as a new step to solve the crisis in Syria.

The Syrian army issued a statement on Friday, saying government forces had entered the town of Manbij, after the Kurdish residents of the town and Kurdish armed group YPG appealed for help, and  invited government forces to take control of the northern area and protect it from a possible Turkish offensive expected in the next few days.

Al-Mayadeen television network reported the Syrian army raised the national flag in Manbij on Friday.

The statement by the Syrian army also pledged to guarantee 'full security for all Syrian citizens and others present in the area', according to Al-Mayadeen television network.

Manbij lies 30 km south of the Turkish border, in Aleppo province.

The People's Protection Unit, or YPG, made an appeal to President Bashar al-Assad's government to prevent a 'Turkish invasion' of Manbij following withdrawal of US military forces from the area. 211/103
