Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces has said Iran and Iraq are two highly influential countries in the Islamic world and West Asia, whose cooperation can contribute a lot to regional peace and stability.

Iran Press/Iran news: Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri made the remark on Friday in his meeting with the Commander of the Iraqi Air Force, Lieutenant General Hamed al-Atiya.

According to a Mehr News Agency report, Bagheri added: "Bilateral cooperation between Iran and Iraq can play an important role in strengthening peace, security and stability in the region to a great extent."

Iran attaches great importance to its relationship with Iraq, he said, calling for boosting of strategic, technical and industrial cooperation between the two sides.

“We consider security and development of Iraq as security and development of our own country,” Major General Bagheri reiterated.

For his part, the top commander of the Iraqi Air Force, Lieutenant General Hamed al-Atiya thanked Iran for its unsparing support of Iraq in the fight against ISIS and Takfiri terrorists and emphasized, “Iraqi government is deeply interested in boosting and enhancing bilateral ties with Iran in all areas.”

On May 02, the Iranian defence minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami called for the enhancement of military and defence cooperation with Iraq, saying collaboration between the two neighbours would serve regional security and stability.

In July 2017, Iran and Iraq signed an agreement to boost military cooperation in a host of fields, including counterterrorism.

Based on the deal, Tehran and Baghdad try to promote interaction and share experiences in the fight against terrorism and extremism, work together to ensure border security, and provide each other with training and logistical, technical and military support.
