Iran Press/Iran news: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Monday that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit would be a turning point in promotion of relations between Iran and Iraq.

After an Iran-Iraq Joint Political Committee meeting, also attended by his Iraqi counterpart Nazar Khairallah, the Iranian official told IRIB News Agency that the two sides discussed planning needed preparations for the imminent visit of President Rouhani to Baghdad.

Araqchi said that today’s meeting was also focused on bilateral relations in different areas, ways to enhance ties and remove obstacles on the way of interactions. Good agreements are expected to be reached during this visit, the official said.

Currently, the political and economic relations between Iran and Iraq are at an excellent level, and Iraq imports natural gas for its power plants from Iran.

Iran is Iraq's top trading partner, with the volume of Tehran-Baghdad trade reaching about $12 billion, according to Iraqi officials.

The two countries are working on the supply of Iranian natural gas to the Sadr neighborhood of Baghdad, and al-Mansuriya power plants through a 270-kilometer pipeline and to Basra near the Iranian border via a separate pipeline. 105/201
