Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Islamic Republic of Iran will support the Venezuelan government and people against plots and conspiracies directed at Caracas.

Iran Press/Iran news: In a phone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart Jorge Arreaza late on Friday, Zarif voiced Iran’s backing to the Venezuelan government which is facing a political crisis.

Both ministers discussed ways of countering US plots against independent governments, especially Venezuela.

Zarif and Arreaza also reviewed the Mexican and Uruguayan governments’ proposals to reinforce local dialogue and using diplomatic means to settle disputes between the Venezuelan government and the opposition groups.

Crisis in Venezuela

Venezuela's National Assembly leader, Juan Guaido has declared himself the legitimate leader of the country, inaugurating himself as a self-declared president of the country.
US President Donald Trump immediately recognized Guaido as the country’s interim president, ratcheting up pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.
Maduro, in response, said he would resist and withstand US plots against his country, and warned about a possible coup attempt.

Although the US and its regional and global allies and partners, including Canada, Panama, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Guatemala have recognized Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela, global response to these measures was negative and other global powers like Russia, China have supported the elected and legal government of Nicolas Maduro.
In this regard, Iran, Mexico, Bolivia, Cuba, Turkey also support Maduro's government and reiterated that they recognize Nicolas Maduro as the legal and legitimate president of Venezuela.
