A commemoration ceremony was held on Thursday on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Imam Khomeini's historic letter to the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, with experts analyzing the late Imam's letter.

Iran Press /Iran news: According to an Iran Press report, the commemoration ceremony was held on Thursday afternoon, with Imam Khomeini's grandson, Hojjat-ol-Islam Hassan Khomeini delivering a keynote speech. Ambassadors from Central Asian countries, countries in the Caucasus, intellectuals, academics, seminary students, and Iranian and non-Iranian researchers from Imam Khomeini's research institute attended the ceremony.

On 1st January 1989, corresponding to 11 Dey 1367 on the Iranian solar Hijri calendar, exactly 30 years ago, Imam Khomeini's famous and historic letter about the impending collapse of communism, and the need for Russia not to rely upon Western countries, was printed in the media and became public knowledge.

Just two days later, members of a special committee, chosen by the Imam himself, handed the letter to the then soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, in Moscow. The committee was made up of Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, Mohammad Javad Larijani, and Marzieh Hadeedchi Dabagh.

Eight weeks later, Mikhail Gorbachev, gave his official reply, with a letter to Tehran delivered by the then foreign minister of the Soviet Union, Edouard Shevardnadze.

Shevardnadze delivered the letter personally to Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace) in Tehran. Gorbachev praised the Imam greatly for his letter, which accurately predicted future events and the fate of Soviet Union. 211/103
