Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council said that expansion of relations between Iran and Republic of Azerbaijan will lead to further regional development.

Iran news: Ali Shamkhani in a meeting with the speaker of the National Assembly of Republic of Azerbaijan, Ogtay Asadov said: "A shared civilization, culture, religion and language between Iran and Azerbaijan is a great asset which will benefit the entire region," Iran Press reported.

Shamkhani added: "Some countries have sold their national security to the will and decision of transregional governments and believe that the United States can guarantee their survival, but the only way for governments to survive is reliance on their own resources and abilities, and most important of all, the backing of their own people."

Elsewhere in his comments, Shamkhani described the Iran-Republic of Azerbaijan border as 'a border of peace and friendship', and said potentially the trade volume between the two countries can be increased significantly, and this may lead to further prosperity, stability and security for both nations.

The secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran pointed to the efforts and actions of some countries opposing friendly relations between Tehran and Baku, adding: "The security of the countries of the region is collectively ensured by adopting common approaches and holding talks as well as close interactions."

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council continued: "The threat of terrorism and its roots including Takfiri thoughts promoted by some regional countries has resulted in a crisis and has become a serious obstacle to growth of Islamic nations."

Shamkhani also warned that US sanctions against Iran lack any legal basis, and are being used as a tool by Donald Trump to exact revenge.

Shamkhani added: "Undoubtedly, such actions, which have repeatedly failed, will have no benefit except America's isolation".

The speaker of the National Assembly of Republic of Azerbaijan, Ogtay Asadov, described the meeting with Iranian officials as effective and said: "The Republic of Azerbaijan is eager to increase bilateral exchanges and cooperation with Iran, and welcomes the initiatives and suggestions presented here".

The Azeri delegation also held meetings with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and speaker of parliament, Ali Larihani. 103/ 211 / 207
