Yemeni groups reached an agreement after a week of negotiations in Sweden

The Yemeni sides reached an agreement on cessation of hostilities in the port of Hudaydah during talks in Sweden from December 6 to 13.

According to a ceasefire agreed between Yemen’s warring parties and put in to practice on December 18, in Hudaydah , the efforts have been done in order to avert more bloodshed in a port city vital for food and aid supplies.

Armed confrontation between forces loyal to the fugitive former government, and the Houthi  Ansarullah movement, has been going on in Yemen since August 2014, reaching the most active phase in March 2015 after the Saudi-led coalition invaded the country.

According to Yemen’s Legal Center for Rights and Development, more than 10,000 civilians, including almost 2,400 children and about 2,000 women, have been killed in the country since the spring of 2015. According to the United Nations, the country is facing the world’s most acute food crisis.

However; on the same day (December 16), the spokesman of Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement expressed doubts about the United Nations' assertions about a recent peace deal on Hudaydah, saying that the progress has been made but the agreement does not seem to be a real agreement.

Meanwhile,  the UNSC authorized the deployment of UN monitors to observe the implementation of a newly-agreed ceasefire arrangement in Yemen’s vital port of Hudaydah, on Friday, December 22.

In fact, on Friday, the first UN resolution on Yemen adopted after more than three years in Security Council to support the truce between Houthi Ansarullah movement and the armed militia loyal to former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Based on United Nation Security council vote, monitors also would observe the pullout of rival forces from the flashpoint area, Iran Press Reported.

Since the onset of aggression, the Yemeni army, backed by fighters from Houthi Ansarullah movement, has been defending the impoverished nation against the invaders. The coalition is also resolute to crush the movement as another goal in its war on Yemen, which is teetering on the edge of famine.

The aggression is estimated to have left 56,000 Yemenis dead.The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has already said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger. According to the world body, Yemen is suffering from the most severe famine in more than 100 years.
