Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho held talks in Tehran on Tuesday , to strengthen relations between the two countries.

Iran, North Korea FMs hold talks in Tehran

According to an Iran Press report, quoting MNA, during the meeting, the two sides voiced satisfaction with the level of bilateral relations and welcomed further expansion of cooperation between Tehran and Pyongyang. The two top diplomats also conferred on the most significant regional and international issues, as well as other topics of mutual interest.

Meanwhile, the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between Iran and ASEAN, took place on the sidelines of the  51st summit of the foreign ministers of member states of ASEAN, the Association of SouthEast Asian Nations. Foreign Minister Zarif represented Iran at the signing ceremony.

Ri Yong Ho‘s Tehran visit was first reported by Tokyo-based news agency Kyodo on August 2, which cited sources with knowledge of the North Korean FM’s itinerary that “Ri is expected to make an official visit to Iran after participating in Saturday's ASEAN Regional Forum meeting of the 10-country regional bloc and other forum members.”

The ASEAN Regional Forum was held on August 4 in Singapore.

Kyodo’s report on Ri's official visit to Tehran was later confirmed by State-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The North Korean foreign minister has already made visits to China, Russia, Azerbaijan Republic, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Sweden, this year.

A North-Korean delegation had also traveled to Iran last year to attend President Rouhani’s inauguration ceremony.
