Deploying the Syrian army at the border with Turkey may be the best way of preserving regional security, according to the Iranian Foreign Minister.

Iran Press/Asia:  Mohammad Javad Zarif said this remarks while speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara, Turkey with his Turkish counterpart on Wednesday.

The first round of talks between Iranian and Turkish foreign ministers was held after Zarif meetings with Syrian official in Damascus, according to Iran Press.

The private talks were held between Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu in Ankara.

Zarif arrived in Ankara, Turkey on Wednesday morning (17 April) after a one-day visit to Syria and holding talks with high-ranking Syrian officials in Damascus on Tuesday.

During the press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Zarif said that deploying the Syrian army along the border with Turkey will assure Ankara that no terrorist movement would threaten Turkey from inside the Syrian territory and is the best way of ensuring stability and security in the region.

The Iranian top diplomat said the Islamic Republic never intends to interfere in other countries' internal and international affairs and wishes that its neighbours maintain friendly and peaceful ties.

Zarif said that the aim of his visit to Turkey is to confer on regional developments, especially those in Syria, “I had a long discussion with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and I will share the details of the meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu for his part said the US decision to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corpse (IRGC) as a terrorist organization is a dangerous development that could lead to chaos in the region and beyond.

Cavusoglu also said US sanctions were harming the people of Iran. The Iranian top diplomat is slated to meet with Erdogan later today.

Zarif said he would tell Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about his talks with Assad, adding that Iran wants to help Turkey and Syria establish “good relations.”

Discussing the upcoming Astana-format Syrian settlement talks will be on Zarif's agenda during the meeting with Erdogan. 101/205/211
