Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian forces’ unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) after six Pakistani civilians were injured, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

Iran Press/Asia: The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) added that Indian Army troops resorted to unprovoked fire in Chirikot sector along LoC targeting the civilian population.

The injured civilians, a man, a woman and four children who were immediately admitted to a hospital, Xinhua reported.

The Pakistan Army said it effectively retaliated to cross-border Indian firing and targeted Indian posts. The retaliatory fire resulted in five Indian soldiers being killed, with several others injured.

Tensions between the two countries intensified in February when at least 40 paramilitary troops were killed in a bombing in the region. New Delhi, which blamed Pakistan for supporting the militants behind the blast, launched retaliatory aerial raids inside Pakistani territory for the first time in decades.

The situation only partially calmed down when an Indian pilot who had been captured in the fighting was returned by Pakistan in a gesture of goodwill.

Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their partition and independence from Britain in 1947.

The disputed region is claimed in full by both sides, which have fought three wars over it.

India regularly accuses Pakistan of arming and training militants and allowing them across the restive frontier in an attempt to launch attacks. Pakistan strongly denies the allegation.   101/211/202
