Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, Assad Qaiser discussed bilateral relations and regional issues.

 

Iran FM, Top Pakistani official discuss bilateral ties

Iran Press- During the Thursday meeting in Islamabad, the two sides discussed the development of bilateral, regional and international cooperation between the two countries, especially in implementation of major economic projects and cooperation between Chabahar and Gwadar ports with the aim of helping the region develop.

They also stressed parliamentary cooperation, including the formation of Iran-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group, cooperation within the framework of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), countering common challenges and fighting terrorism,IFP news website reported.

Zarif arrived in Islamabad earlier in the day in the first official visit of a foreign diplomat since the formation of the new government in Pakistan.

Upon his arrival, a high-level Pakistani team received the Iranian diplomat. Speaking to reporters in Islambad, Zarif expressed the hope that relations between the two neighbouring states would further develop during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s term in office.

Zarif is scheduled to hold meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Prime Minister Khan and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Imran Khan has been as sworn in as Pakistan's new prime minister on Aug 17, 2018 after his party's victory in last month's election.

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has declared victory in Pakistan's recently general elections against the party of jailed ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif amid accusations of vote rigging.

Pakistan’s economy expanded at 5.8 percent in the last fiscal year, its quickest pace in 13 years, but the rupee currency has been devalued four times since December. Interest rates have been raised three times.
