Iran Press/ Iran news: On Tuesday, December 21, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh officially confirmed that Hassan Irlou had died of COVID complications.
He announced that Irlou had contracted COVID-19 in Yemen and returned to Iran in unfavorable conditions due to the late cooperation of some countries and died on Tuesday morning, despite using all treatment steps.
Hassan Irlou was a diplomat with a background in the Foreign Ministry and a senior expert in the Arabian Peninsula.
He was the Head of the Yemeni desk at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the beginning of the war against Yemen in 2015, the coordinator of Iran's humanitarian aid to Yemen (sending aid planes and rescue ships and then providing aid under the UN coordination, etc.).
Prior to that, Irlou served as Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Yemeni Affairs from 2015 to 2020.
About a year after, the Yemeni National Salvation Government appointed Ibrahim Mohammed al-Dailami as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen to the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran also sent a new ambassador to Yemen after five years.
Following the official announcement of the Iranian ambassador's stay in Yemen, Irlou's presence and activities in Yemen were protested by the resigned government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.
In December 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on Iran's Ambassador to Yemen, Hassan Irlou. A day later, the Iranian Foreign Ministry retaliated by imposing sanctions on US Ambassador to Yemen Christopher Hansel.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Christopher Hansel had a pivotal role in the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and his name was on the Islamic Republic of Iran's sanctions list.
Hassan Irlou, who had returned to Iran with COVID complications, passed away on Tuesday morning, and his funeral was held today (Wednesday).
