Iran Press/Europe: Delivering a speech on Thursday in Vienna on 'Unilateral Coercive Measures and its Impacts', Idriss Jazairy lamented the unprecedented increase of unilateral sanctions and the waging of an economic war against various countries.
The UN special rapporteur pointed to Iran's international nuclear deal and said that US withdrew from the deal unilaterally, sanctioned Iran and threatened all countries doing business with Tehran, according to an Iran Press report.
With Iran's access to SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) cut off, Jazairy explained, international economic transactions became impossible for Iran, with the country having difficulty in purchasing essential items such as food and medicines.
He described the situation as an illegal blockade and collective punishment, both of which have been prohibited by international law.
The one-day Seminar 'Unilateral Coercive Measure and their Impacts' was an initiative of Iran, Cuba and Venezuela, and was attended by Russia, China, and Syria's representatives in Vienna.
The seminar was supposed to address such issues as unilateral sanctions and international law, the impact of unilateral sanctions from a human rights point-of-view, unilateral sanction and countries' responsibilities under international criminal law, and the role and responsibilities of media vis-a-vis unilateral sanction. 101/211/215
