Iran Press/ Iran news: During a meeting with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan Affairs and the Head of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Deborah Lyons on Monday, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian referred to Iran's continued support for the Afghan people and its important role in Iran's foreign policy and said: "Afghanistan's transition from the status quo will certainly be possible with the cooperation of influential neighboring countries and regional and global actors."
He referred to the recent movements of terrorist leaders and outfits, especially ISIS, in Afghanistan and said: "Unfortunately, the United States is taking advantage of the situation in Afghanistan to the point that some US troops are smuggling drugs from Bagram airport while ostensibly claiming to be supporters of the peace process."
"We consider the security of Afghanistan as our own security and the security of the region, and we support any UN action to establish security, peace, and prosperity in this important neighboring country," Amir-Abdollahian added.
Deborah Lyons also referred to the history of cooperation of the Islamic Republic of Iran in supporting the peace process in Afghanistan and said: "As a neighbor of Afghanistan and a strategically influential country in the region, Iran has always been instrumental in supporting the Afghan people."
The UN secretary-general for Afghanistan affairs and the head of UNAMA appreciated Iran's support for Afghan refugees and displaced persons and for helping to build Afghanistan's roads and energy supply and said: "We need the help of all sides, parties, neighboring countries, and international organizations to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan and to improve the economic conditions to motivate the people of this country, especially given that the COVID-19 outbreak has doubled the country's economic problems."
