The US military announced that it had intercepted several Russian and Chinese bombers in international airspace near the coast of Alaska, the first time the two Asian allies made a joint foray into the area.

Iran PressAmerica: On Wednesday, Russian and Chinese nuclear-capable bombers were detected within the U.S. air defense identification zone near Alaska, leading to the interception of the aircraft by North American Aerospace Defense Command jets, as stated by the command. The aircraft in question were two Tu-95 Russian bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers, both classified as strategic bombers capable of launching missiles.

The four bombers flew within international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace, the statement said.

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement late on Wednesday that two Russian Tu-95s and two Chinese H-6s had entered what is known as the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

The Pentagon needs to build up military forces and infrastructure in the region to protect the Arctic and the Indo-Pacific region he said.

Russian bombers frequently fly into the U.S. and Canadian air defense zones in what military analysts say are attempts to test air defenses.

However, the presence of two Chinese bombers in the air defense zone is unusual and has not been reported before. 219
